The West Blocton Fire Department has long been an important part of the town's commitment to protecting its residents and community. With a strong tradition of volunteer service, the department is made up of dedicated firefighters who answer the call when their neighbors need help most.

Fire protection has deep roots in West Blocton's history. During the town's early years, when West Blocton was a thriving coal-mining community, fire posed a serious threat to homes and businesses. In 1927, a devastating fire swept through the town's business district, destroying numerous businesses and homes. The community rebuilt, demonstrating the same resilience and determination that continues to characterize West Blocton today.

Today, the West Blocton Fire Department continues that tradition of service by responding to emergencies and working to keep the community safe. The department represents more than emergency response—it represents neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers giving their time, and a community coming together in times of need.

The mission of West Blocton Volunteer Fire Department is to protect life, property, and the environment through professional emergency response, fire prevention, public education, and community service. We are committed to serving our citizens with courage, integrity, compassion, and dedication while maintaining the highest standards of training, teamwork, and preparedness. As volunteers, we proudly answer the call at all hours, working together to ensure the safety and well being of the West Blocton community we are honored to serve.
Joe mccool
Chief Joe McCool is a lifelong resident of West Blocton and a proud graduate of West Blocton High School. His lifelong connection to the community has helped shape his commitment to serving and protecting the people of West Blocton. Chief McCool began his service with the West Blocton Fire Department in 1987 and has dedicated nearly four decades to the department and the community he calls home. Throughout his career, he has continued to expand his knowledge and skills through specialized training and education.
